About Us

Connecting People Through Gardening and Nature

Originally established in 1940 as a direct response to the wartime Dig For Victory campaign, Gillingham Horticultural Society (GHS) continues to welcome members of all ages and backgrounds who share a passion for, and interest in, gardening. Whether you grow vegetables, fruits, or flowers, you’ll find a community of like-minded individuals which meets once a month to share experiences and learn from one another while also supporting local charities through fund raising and donations. With our affiliation to the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) and the Kent Federation of Horticultural Societies we offer our 300 plus members in the Gillingham area the benefits of discounted gardening supplies from 'The Shed', a programme of social events, affordable trips, and horticultural shows throughout the year.

Our Social Secretary provides opportunities for members to stay active in and engaged with the Society through an extensive social programme which includes:

 

Free monthly social meetings featuring captivating speakers on a range of gardening related and other topics​

Fabulous and keenly priced GHS  day trips  and short holidays

Annual BBQ

Annual Presentation Evening  recognising success in our horticultural shows

Reduced entry to RHS and Affiliated Gardens (contact Social Secretary for details)

 

Whilst attendance is free for members, a small charge applies for non members.

Shows & Competitions

The Society hosts three annual, free to enter, horticultural shows for members, judged according to RHS rules.

 

Our events allow members to present the results of their gardening, craft, and culinary skills. We host informal shows in the Spring and Summer, culminating in a more comprehensive Autumn Show.

 

Successful entrants are recognised each year with certificates and trophies at our Annual Presentation Evening

The Shed

The Shed is conveniently located on the Woodlands Road allotment site and is a members only retail outlet for the Society  offering a wide range of garden and allotment supplies at competitive prices.

 

Products include various types and grades of compost, fertilizers, pest control products, canes, netting, weed control solutions, and a selection of hand tools, all offered at attractive prices compared to commercial centres.

Floral Art Group

Our Floral Art Group is a small band of ladies which meets regularly to develop and extend their flower arranging skills and expertise by creating designs and sharing knowledge, skills and experience in a friendly environment.


Society members are warmly invited to join The Group holds evening meetings typically on two Tuesdays a month. We welcome anyone interested in exploring the beautiful craft of floral art!
Please note that to attend Floral Art Group meetings, participants must be members of the Gillingham Horticultural Society.
